Tintswalo at Lapalala is located in the 44,500 hectare malaria-free Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, in the greater Waterberg area, which is a three hour drive, or a 30 minute flight, from Johannesburg. Bordered by private game sanctuaries, the sheer expanse of this unspoiled biosphere area results in no light pollution, and fabulous star-gazing.
The Lapalala Wilderness also offers security for sable and roan antelope, herds of buffalo and black and white rhino, that are all bred on the reserve. 27 kilometres of unspoiled rivers meander through the reserve, providing opportunities to fish, boat and swim in the rapids.
The Tintswalo at Lapalala is a tented, eco-friendly camp. The experienced guides and trackers ensure that guests have a high quality, varied and interactive game and wilderness experience.
Tintswalo at Lapalala’s main lodge lounge has a large fireplace. Surrounded on one side by a large deck overlooking an eventful watering hole, guests can take a refreshing dip in the lodge’s swimming pool whilst watching herds of game stroll by.
Traditional cuisine is served in several locations around the camp, including unforgettable boma dinners enjoyed beneath the stars, or indulgent al fresco meals on the extensive open lodge deck. After a game drive relax with a wonderful Africology massage.
The open 4x4 safari vehicles come with radios for communication, individual blankets for early morning and evening chill, ponchos for rainy weather and spot lights for night viewing. The experienced guides are “Field Guide Association” accredited and they offer educational and interpretive game drives through the reserve, through the endangered wildlife breeding camps, fishing on the Palala River, sundowners on the river barge, walks to the iron age site to view ancient artefacts and visit well-preserved bushman paintings.
Take a picnic along the river or a bush breakfast. Spend the night on a raised wooden deck in a remote part of the reserve, or go on a stargazing bushwalk. Tintswalo guides offer an exhilarating activity program to keep children entertained for hours and visits to the Lapalala Wilderness School can be arranged.
Situated close to the Kalahari Desert, just on the Botswana border lays Madikwe game reserve- a reserve a little bit different to other parks and reservation areas in South Africa.
Established in 1991 after the African government decided the soil was too poor for farming and the disadvantaged area needed an economic uplift, 10,000 mammals were relocated from other National Parks, and this was the birth of Madikwe Game Reserve.
Although one of the lesser known conservations in South Africa, Madikew is beautifully unspoilt and a lot less busy than the larger parks meaning a more authentic and real experience. It’s now home to 120 different mammal species including some rare and endangered such as the Black Rhino and African Wild Dog. It is a malaria free area ensuring that extra peace of mind when on your safari experience.
Today the reserve is regarded as a prime example of how relationships amongst communities and government can enhance conservation success.
