Atacama Desert

In the far north of Chile, but only a two hour flight from Santiago, lies the driest desert in the world - the Atacama. The Atacama is one of the world's most accessible deserts and has a clutch of superb lodges to relax at after a day of exploring and adventuring.

The desert oasis village San Pedro de Atacama is just under a two hour drive from the regional airport at Calama. From here spend your days travelling with a private guide and 4x4 setting off before sunrise to experience the vivid colours of turquoise sulphur lakes with flamingos at dawn, watch exploding geysers and soak in thermal pools. Enjoy a gourmet picnic with views to mesmerising volcanoes and finish your day atop a sand dune watching the sunset.

The Atacama is a heaven for photographers, astronomers and adventureres but also for those that simply want to get the most out of a personalised, unrushed desert experience staying at exquisite lodges with exceptional service.

The Atacama Desert is lovely to visit all year round with dry, mostly sunny days reaching high daytime temperatures. Expect cooler temperatures at higher altitudes and after dark when temperatures drop considerably revealing clear skies and spectacular star gazing.
The winter months (June-September) can see temperatures plummet at dusk with chilly mornings too. It's always wise to carry a fleece if out close to sunset and have plenty of sunscreen during the day.
