On the wind swept Atlantic coast explore the whitewashed medina and turquiose shutters of bohemian Essaouira, with its local art scene, a thriving fishing industry and blue fishing boats bobbing in the harbour.
Essaouira is located only a few hours west of Marrakech and is a Mediterranean style fishing port and village, with Atlantic waves crashing against a wide sandy bay. It has been inhabited since the 5th century BC, although the city as we now recognise it originated in the 18th century. The city is very picturesque and there is a fortified medina, plus a myriad of narrow alleyways and secret doorways which sporadically open out into the hustle and bustle of small squares.
Essaouira is the perfect place for activities, with 10km of sweeping sands to the south of the town, where you can ride along the beach on a horse or camel and hire a quad bike. For watersports enthusiasts you can go surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing.
The Atlantic coastline offers various towns and futher north from Essaouira you'll find Oulidia, which is set on a charming lagoon, which is famous for its oyster beds, along with flocks of pink flamingoes. Further South you will find Agadir, which is a busy port and perfect for some winter sun.
