Region

The Cape Winelands are an easy drive from Cape Town and the dramatic mountains surround an array of working vineyards, elegant Cape Dutch Estates and towns boasting top restaurants. This area is known as the gourmet centre of South Africa.

Sample some of the regions award winning wine, stroll through exquisitely manicured gardens or explore a variety of shops, art galleries and antique shops in the oak-lined streets of the local towns. You can even go wine tasting on horseback!

Franschhoek is an utterly charming little town with French Hugenot heritage and certainly offers the best restaurants that are home to some of South Africa's top chefs. Historic Stellenbosch is a buzzing university town full of history and Cape Dutch buildings and is surrounded by approximately 200 vineyards.

Paarl lies nestled amongst vineyards laden with the harvest's finest offerings, and further afield are the wine areas of Robertson, Tullbagh, Wellington and Hemel-en-Aarde.

The Winelands experiences a Mediterranean, sub-tropical climate with hot and usually dry summers (from December to February), and cold and wet winters (from June to August). The winter months can experience heavy rains, strong northwesterly winds and low temperatures, but the winter doesn't preclude wine-tasting and many of the indoor venues are warm and cosy during the cold months.
