Whales, fur seals and dolphins are all easily spotted in the coastal waters around Kaikoura, a popular diving destination due to its incredible array of marine life.

Gastronomically, South Island is unique, as locals have creative takes on locally sourced lamb and seafood like abalone, oysters and scallops.

Spend a few hours hiking or mountain biking through one of the National Park’s, where the landscape is diverse and dramatic, yet easily accessible. Or try rafting, skiing, diving and even skydiving - South Island is for those who wish to live on the wild side.

While the inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as -10 C in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and abundant sunshine. The warmest months are January, February and March, and the coldest June, July and August, where the most rainfall occurs.
