Rosyth Estate is a delightful former 1926 colonial planter’s bungalow and now a family-owned boutique hotel.
Set in a 62 acre private tea and rubber estate, the house is full of character and a very homely place to stay. Explore the estate, visit the local tea factory, chill by the pool or take in the stunning views.
The rooms and suites are divided between the main house and separate outbuildings within the grounds. Mango and Clove are the classic rooms and offer a combination of double, twin, triple and extra bed options.
The Classic Suite is situated in the main house with two rooms sharing a bathroom. This is a perfect combination for families or a couple looking for private living space.
Cinnamon, Coconut and Lime are classed as Deluxe Rooms with larger bathrooms, double wash basins, two with four-poster beds and all offering some private outdoor space. Coconut and Lime interconnect. Cinnamon offers disabled access.
The Plantation Suites, Tea and Pepper are located 50 m from the main house and enjoy stunning
views from the front elevation. These two suites include indoor and outdoor living spaces and outdoor baths on the balcony and terrace. The suites interconnect and offer good privacy.
Finally, the latest addition, the Rock Villa houses are two glorious suites in a dramatic location - on a rock - with jaw dropping views. It is worth noting here that there are 30 steps up to this building.
Dining at Rosyth is a delight and allows guests the chance to savour local cuisine at its best. Every attempt is made to use the home-grown produce from their organic garden and around the estate.
If you are not so keen on curry or have simply eaten too much of it, international cuisine is also available on the menu. The chef is very open to requests!
The owners are passionate foodies and have personally selected some of the recipes. Cookery lessons and demonstrations are available to those staying and are very popular so pre-booking is required.
A small haven in the gardens is home to The Rock Spa, where massage, scrubs, facials and reflexology can be arranged.
The area known as the Cultural Triangle encompasses Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy with the majestic Sigiriya Rock Fortress at the centre of the triangle.
Kandy is the second largest city of Sri Lanka and is of great significance in the history of the island. The city is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is a hugely important pilgrimage site for Buddhists and well worth a visit. The temple sits next to a pretty lake in the centre of the city and is surrounded by hills. Also nearby and hidden away is the British Garrison Cemetery which is a true gem to discover in order to hear some quirky tales behind the headstones revealing snippets of history. The city's botanical gardens are a wonderful large open space in the university area called Peradeniya and are a delight for horticultural enthusiasts. The hills to the north east of Kandy offer fabulous opportunities for trekking and mountain biking.
The two ancient cities of Anaradhapura and Polonnaruwa were the pinnacles of early Sinhalese civilisation and to this day contain well preserved monuments giving an insight into the importance of these cities culturally and historically. The spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a must see and has become an iconic symbol for the country. Visitors to this region are spoilt for choice in terms of other sites to visit including Dambulla Cave Temples, Mihintale, Aukana and Sasseruwa Buddha statues and Aluvihara and Ridi Vihara temples amongst others. Near Sigiriya there are also the National Parks of Minneriya, Wasgomuwa and Kaudulla. Minneriya is home to the largest congregation of Asian elephant between July and October.
Set in the hills to the west of Kandy, Rosyth Estate is just a ten minute drive away from the bustling town of Kegalle. Perched on a hillside, and situated at an elevation of approximately 1,000 ft the house benefits from stunning views from the front veranda towards Kandy and the surrounding ranges of hills 20-30 km away, whilst the rear overlooks the estate and jungle covered hill sides.
The 62-acre estate contains walking trails, there are mountain biking routes and staff will be happy to suggest places to walk or to guide you through the tea terraces, rubber plantation and down to the paddy fields. Down in the bottom of the estate discover the old rubber presses and smoke house, where on a hot day, you can cool down in the small waterfall.
Pothgulgala Aranyana Temple, beautiful local temple complex, is just 3½ km from Rosyth. Unusually this local temple has both a Monastery and a Nunnery (only accessible to ladies). The temple can be reached by mountain bike, however, it is downhill there and uphill all of the way back. Journey time by vehicle is 10 minutes.
There is also a local tea factory very close by (walking distance 10 mins) which guests can visit to understand the tea making process, an integral part of Sri Lankan life!
Kandy, last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just under 1 hrs drive away. Here you can visit the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic and the beautiful botanical gardens. Set over 147 acres and dating back to 1371, the gardens are home to over 400 species and a beautiful orchid house.
