As you wind your way along the Amalfi Coast and up into Ravello, there is very much a feeling of heading into the clouds. Tucked away down a quaint cobbled street, that is typical of this wonderful small town, and situatued at the highest point of Ravello, is Palazzo Avino. As soon as you walk into the very pretty entrance you know you are somewhere special as the glorious, panoramic view becomes apparent.
Family owned and run, there is a lovely atmosphere in this glorious hotel. Originally built in the 12th century, Palazzo Avino is an architectural delight refurbished to a very high standard. Since the property is located on slope there are numerous levels housing a swimming pool, spa, gardens, the rooms and suites, the bar and the restaurants.
There are 43 rooms in total, including 11 suites with outstanding views. Choice pieces of fun artwork representing the surroundings by renowned artist Marco Nereo Rotelli are dotted around the public areas, which certainly adds spalshes of colour and a funky edge to the decor!
The hotel itself offers several dining options including Rossellinis, a one Michelin Star fine dining experience and the Terrazza Belvedere for more casual dining.
The wonderful Lobster & Martini Bar is the perfect spot for an 'aperitivo' or 'digestivo', the bar being aptly named as guests can enjoy the freshest local lobster paired with just the right Champagne or prosecco. Guests can also choose from a range of 100 Martinis served however they want and created by the in house Martini mixologist.
The spa offers massage and treatment rooms, Turkish steam bath, sauna and hydro pool and use a line of products that have been especially devleoped for the hotel using organic products from the local area such as lemons from Sorrento and apricots from Mount Vesuvius. In the rooms one can even change the scent of the provided bathroom amenities to suit your
The hotel also owns a unique Clubhouse by the Sea, located in the small town of Marmorata, just a 15 minute drive from Ravello. There is a shuttle bus that runs guests to and from the Clubhouse and guests can enjoy full service inlcuding drinks, meals and snacks here.
The hotel's location is perfect for exploring Ravello, away from the main square yet just a five minute walk.
A stunning coastline stretching fifty kilometres in Italy's Campania region, the Amalfi Coast is famous for its pastel coloured fishing villages clinging onto its cliff side, its rugged shoreline dotted with pretty beaches and its lemon groves, helping to produce the much loved Limoncello liqueur.
UNESCO has declared this stunning region as a World Heritage Site due to it being an "outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape with exceptional cultural natural scenic values resulting from its dramatic topography and historical evolution."
Explore the Amalfi Coast either on foot with a guided hike, by private vehicle with a guide or, in our opinion the best way to spend one's time is by boat, taking you to places only accessible on the water. Indulge in the history of the region's towns; Villa Rufolo in Ravello is a must see, as is the Amalfi Cathedral, and of course Sorrento - the town which claims right to Limoncello!
Within reach from the Amalfi Coast is of course Pompeii, a town buried in ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, creating what is now one of the most impressive, and certainly most famous, archaeological sites in the world. Also well worth a visit is Herculaneum. Located on the coast, just 5 miles south of Naples, this coastal town was also buried by the same eruption as Pompeii and visitors enjoy dramatic views out over the sea whilst discovering the well-preserved excavated ruins.
The islands of Capri and Ischia can also be accessed from the Amalfi Coast. The tiny island of Capri has become one of the most glamorous and famous places in the whole of Italy, attracting the rich and famous with it's picture perfect setting, designer shops and wonderful hotels. Nearby larger Ischia is more low key and a stunning island to visit, especially for spa lovers. The volcanic island has natural, mineral-rich thermal waters and this combined with an air of complete authenticity still remaining in the villages in particular.
