Deep in the cloud forest within the mountainous interior of Costa Rica, Pacuare Lodge is in a wonderful position beside the raging river bank, nestled below vertical slopes that are adorned with primary cloud forest.

Pacuare is only reached by white water raft or an extremely rugged downhill 4x4 ride. It takes almost a full day to journey to and from Pacuare Lodge either by road or raft. Therefore, it is definitely not for the faint hearted! But you will be rewarded by an exceptional experience in an extremely isolated region of Costa Rica.

The lodge is exquisite with 20 individual suites and villas scattered throughout the forest clearing. There are 5 categories of room type ranging from the simpler but spacious River Suites, to the breath taking Linda Vista Suites in an elevated position above the river with private spring fed oversized plunge pools.

A 2 or 3 night stay is perfect to enjoy a one or two full days being immersed in the pristine environment amongst the humming birds, exploring the trails to hidden waterfalls, indulging at the spa, zip wiring above the canopy and relaxing in your suite or villa. There is also a wonderful infinity pool.

There is one main restaurant offering a fayre of fresh locally sourced organic food, incredible juices, fruit and salads mixed with grains, rice and a meat dish of the day. Dinner is by candlelight and torch light back to your room allowing for an early turn in to relax to the sound of the river and cicadas.

Rise early for a sunrise birding walk followed by a wholesome breakfast, exploring or relaxing in preparation for the thrilling white water ride back to civilisation!

Region

The Central Highlands will usually be your first glimpse of Costa Rica as you come into land in San José. The region is exceptionally scenic with green clad mountains and fertile valleys characterised by coffee plantations.

Pretty agricultural towns dot the landscape surrounded by spectacular and often active volcanoes. On the higher slopes cloud and rainforests are home to an incredible array of birds and flora and here you will find luxurious cosy lodges with open fires and hot tubs to keep you warm at the higher altitude in the cooler evening air.

Hidden cloud forest lodges are only accessible by rafting in on white water rapids. Be lost in nature for a night or two before heading back to civilisation to marvel at the spectacular Arenal Volcano and a plethora of adventurous activities before heading out to the coast. The interior is a wonderful region to explore, rich in wildlife and diverse ecosystems.

Similar to the Caribbean the only months to avoid are September and October which are the height of the wet season. Very wet days and overcast.

November to March are considered dry, sunny and warm to hot, can be humid and always expect a chance of rain and cooler at higher altitude.

April to August is called the Green Season with more chance of rain but in shorter bursts with still lovely sunny days and high temperatures.
