Meroe Tented Camp is located in Bagarwyia, about 230 km north of Khartoum, and roughly two kilometres from the Royal Necropolis, overlooking the beautiful pyramids of Meroe.

The accommodation consists of 22 twin-bedded tents which are 4x4 metres and have been tastefully but simply furnished, each tent has its own private bathroom hut with shower and toilet – it is private but separate at the back of each tent. Each tent has a furnished veranda with two comfortable chairs, where you can relax and simply take in the view of the pyramids, two single beds and a chest of drawers for clothes, bedside table and a lamp.

The Camp is open from October to the end of April; it is run by an Italian manager and well trained Sudanese staff. With this permanent facility, this dry region of extraordinary archaeological interest and beautiful landscapes becomes accessible even to those reluctant to sacrifice their comfort.

There is an indoor restaurant with a large paved area around to be able to eat outside in the pleasant spring evenings, that serves Italian and local cuisine. There is also a veranda on the top of the restaurant to watch the sunset over the pyramids or to simply relax.

The camp offers stunning views of more than forty pyramids and is a great place to be based for several days whilst one ventures out exploring.

Meroe was the southern capital of the Kushite Kingdom, or Napata / Meroitic Kingdom, that spanned the period c.800 BC. - c.350 AD. The culture of Meroe developed from the XXV Dynasty of the Ancient Egypt, and its importance gradually increased starting the so called "Meroitic Period".

The Kingdom of Meroe is also known for the role of the Queens called "Candaces" who were as strong as their royal husbands as we can well see in the inscriptions found in the many temples and Kiosks.

Region

Meroe was a rich city which thrived due to its positioning on several key trade routes. Flourishing for more than a thousand years, the city's heyday and that of its culture came to an unexpected end succeeding its defeat by the Aksumite Empire in the fourth century AD.

The remnants of this impressive imperial city can still be seen, but it is the ancient Royal Cemetery that captures the most attention. More than 200 Nubian-style pyramids, in numerous states of disrepair, are gathered in three groups around the city.

The Royal Necropolis of Meroe is located at approximately 3km from the Nile on the hills covered by yellow sand dunes. Many of the pyramids stand out with their sharp shapes against the clear sky. Each one has its own funerary chapel where the walls are decorated with bas-reliefs which shows the King’s life and offers to the gods.
