Situated in the quaint village of Jamtara, in the stunning Pench National Park, Jamtara Wilderness Camp offers a fantastic rural wildlife experience. With just ten luxury tents and surrounded by magnificent Arjuna trees, each room overlooks the gorgeous forest, providing the perfect background to this jungle experience.
The Lodge itself celebrates rural India, decorated in a safari colonial style, gloriously taking you back in time where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is no wifi or phone signal here, which ensures you are able to take in the beautiful surroundings and properly enjoy the experience.
The camp has its own pool, perfect for a dip after an early morning game drive, lounge areas and a library, where you can brush up on your knowledge of the local flora and fauna or simply relax.
Dining takes place in the central dining room and is often communal, although individual tables can be set up and private bush dinners in secluded locations around camp. Continental, Indian and Oriental Cuisine are served using as much locally grown and sourced produce as possible. Early morning tea and coffee is served before the game drives. There are no set meal times but dinner tends to be earlier rather than later.
The rooms, each with their own private bathroom, are air-conditioned and you even have the option
of rolling up the front panels of your tents in order to really connect to nature.
Each one has been carefully placed to ensure privacy at all times. The rooms have been made to feel cosy with rugs and lovely colours, however if you do feel cold at all at night, hot water bottles and heaters are available on request.
The camp also offers the opportunity to sleep out on a Star Bed, a machaan built high up on stilts, giving you incredible views of the surrounding fields and skies. This truly is a magical experience. The Star Bed initiative also supports the local community as the land on which it stands is leased from a local farmer thus helping the local rural economy.
Guests at Jamtara Wilderness Camp can choose between many exciting activities such as safaris, where you may be lucky enough to spot tiger, leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, monkeys to name a few. The camp is located very close to the Jamtara Gate.
When not out looking for wildlife in the park, guests can use the camp's bicycles, enjoy special cooking classes, village walks or walks in the buffer zone with an experienced naturalist.
With traditional cuisine, fabulous wildlife and friendly staff, Jamtara is a superb choice to experience rural India.
This beautiful area of India is home to some of the most impressive natural and man-made wonders that India has to offer. Historically significant sites merge seamlessly with numerous wildlife sanctuaries; providing safe havens for some of the planet’s most endangered species.
The region is home to multiple national parks which all play their part in nurturing wildlife such as tiger, sloth bear, deer, jackal and migratory birds. Consequently, visitors are able to admire some of India’s most stunning fauna and flora in its natural environment. Fortunately lack of easy accessibility has kept visitor numbers down to the parks in comparison to other parks such as Ranthambhore in Rajasthan.
In addition to incredible wildlife experiences, spectacular sculptures, temples and caves are found throughout. For example, the temples of Khajuraho attract historians, archaeologists and artists from every corner of the earth as they marvel at ancient works that depict the myriad elements of life. The uniqueness of Khajuraho has led it to be recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as is the Buddhist Complex at Sanchi outside Bhopal, famous for its great Stupa, one of the oldest structures in India.
Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a fascinating city to visit. Known as The City of Pearls and famous for being the reputed mining source of the disputed Koh-i-Noor diamond, the city certainly has a complex and rich history and offers plenty to any visitors; from Golconda Fort and Qu'tub Shahi Tombs to the opulent Chowmahalla Palace. Hyderabad is a diverse mix of both Muslim and Hindu traditions and thus a stay in this city offers a completely unique perspective of India.
The number of sites, activities and experiences available within Central India is vast and many return to this region time after time. This is an area worthy of a visit for any intrepid adventurer keen on seeing both native and modern Indian culture or wildlife and it is vital to allow enough time to do so to fully appreciate and enjoy the experience.
