This glorious boutique hotel is nestled right in the heart of Galle, step out from the hotel onto the cobbled streets and explore the atmospheric fort. Part of the excellent Teardrop Hotels group, the building has been lovingly restored with a contemporary edge and is a fabulous place to stay.
Just 18 air-conditioned rooms and suites are available for guests with king size or twin beds. Banyan and Bazaar bedrooms both have four poster beds, adding a touch of romance to the vibe (as well as the practicality of the mosquito nets surrounding). Banyan rooms have wet rooms with rain shower and private verandah or terrace, Bazaar rooms are a touch larger with en-suite terrazzo wet room with rain shower and courtyard views.
Upper Suites consist of an entrance hall, dressing area and bedroom with king-size four-poster double bed, sitting area with sofa and a large private balcony with views across the fort's rooftops. Large bathroom with rain shower and freestanding bathtub, so if you like a relaxing soak this is the one to go for.
Families are very welcome at The Fort Bazaar. The hotel provides baby cots for the under 2's without charge and extra beds for children sharing their parents’ room (Upper Suites only). Alternatively Banyan and Bazaar rooms can interconnect for a one double and one twin combination with two bathrooms as well.
For a wonderful family friendly room, book the
split level Upper Family Suite; a spacious and luxurious haven for parents with little people in tow. On the lower floor is a good sized room with a king-sized four poster bed and open plan lounge, while up on the mezzanine floor are twin single beds. Perfect for that extra bit of peace and privacy for everyone. The suite has a large bathroom with rainshower and bathtub and a terrace with views of the Galle Fort.
The hotel is still awaiting permission to complete their swimming pool but this really is no issue at all, as guests are provided with free transport and free use of the two swimming pools at Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, a 5-10 minute drive from the hotel. The hotel is offering complimentary tuk tuks to The Beach Club in Talpe (under the same management), which has a lovely seaside restaurant with pool just a 15-20-minute drive away.
The Church Street Social is one of Galle’s most vibrant dining venues and stays cool with air-conditioning too. Serving contemporary western fusion cuisine with a Moroccan twist along with classic Sri Lankan curries. Meals are available all day and always a la carte. The bar is also air-conditioned and has TV's for watching sports fixtures (for those who can't bear to miss out).
The hotel's 'Z spa' has three air-conditioned single treatment rooms tucked away towards the back of the hotel in a quieter area, two of which have steam showers in their bathrooms.
Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Sri Lanka is Galle Fort, which over the centuries has experienced Dutch, Portuguese and British influences and has played an important role as a trading post. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this small fortified town has been growing in popularity over the past years and is now a very fashionable place to be. Along her cobbled streets, boutique stores rub shoulders with delightful small hotels and somehow the authenticity and atmosphere of the town has been retained despite an increasing number of visitors to the area. A stay within the Fort itself is highly reccommended for at least two nights. Stay longer if you can and there willl certainly be plenty to do in the area from cultural experiences to active options.
Within a short distance from Galle are some glorious accomodation options too, from picturesque properties overlooking lakes or tea plantations to numerous stunning, small and intimate beach retreats. The coastline that heads eastwards is home to some heavenly beaches, where palm-lined shores meet the might of the Indian Ocean. Sea swimming can be tricky in this region as the currents and waves can be strong, however there are some sheltered coves where swimming is fine. There are also some wonderful spots on the west coast too, north of Galle heading towards Colombo including Hikkaduwa, Balapitiya and Bentota, the latter offering a good array of watersports on the lagoon.
Whether you spend your entire time in Sri Lanka in the south west or just a few days, you will most certainly fall in love with the area and never want to leave.
Galle Fort is a wonderful place to spend a few days, with the cobbled streets being home to boutiques (jewellery, clothes and antiques to name a few) and local restaurants. Local residents mingle alongside visitors in this delightful old fort town making for a very pleasant atmosphere. It is a friendly town.
Our recommendation is to rise very early and take a walk around the fort as the streets are so quiet and then later in the evening this is also a very pleasant time as locals gather around the upper walls of the fort to watch the sun go down or perhaps enjoy a game of cricket or football in a square.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy in the local area from guided tours of the Fort to cookery classes or traditional mask making as well as nearby beaches and the option of heading out on the water for water sports, such as surfing, or go whale watching on a boat.
Cycling in the Galle area with a local guide is a superb way of seeing the villages outside the fort. Not far from Galle there are low lying tea plantations, which can be visited and tastings arranged.
