Capella Ubud is totally unique in style and approach on the luxury hotel scene in Bali. The concept was created and realised by the celebrated architect Bill Bensley. The hotel, or moreover tented camp, takes inspiration from the early European settlers from the 1800s and serves as a tribute to their spirit of adventure amidst untouched nature.

Nestled between Ubud’s rainforest, rice paddy fields and the sacred Wos River, in an authentic Balinese artist village called Keliki, Capella Ubud, Bali offers 22 extravagant, individually styled one-bedroom tents and one tented two-bedroom lodge.

The camp is adorned with handpicked valuable antique art objects, books, paintings, drawings and furniture, some of which are from the owner’s treasured private collection. No tree was cut during construction so that the refined jungle camp remains a hidden sanctuary from afar.

The setting is dramatic, with prominent rice paddies surrounding the entrance, leading through a densely forested valley all the way down to the sacred Wos river. Guests arrive to The Camp Post, which acts as a reception. Near to the top of the site is Mads Lange - the camp’s dining room and The Officers Tent - where morning coffee, afternoon tea, the daily evening cocktail and canapé ritual

and after dinner drinks are served and board games and a billiards table are provided for guests - is also the camp’s living room and library.

The Camp’s split-level tented dining room, Mads Lange, is named in honour of the famous Danish spice trader, entrepreneur and peace maker of Bali, Knight of the Order of the Netherlands and recipient of the Danish Gold medal of achievement - Mads Johansen Lange, nicknamed “The White King of Bali”.

Api Jiwa is an intimate and highly interactive Asian barbecue. The Camp Fire is not merely the place to meet the local storyteller over hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows but, weather permitting, a lovely spot for relaxed dining and the outdoor cinema screen.

Fabulous exercise facilities and activity options are on offer to burn off all the delicious food consumed and pampering spa treatments, designed around the moon phases, spiritual and sound healing as well as in-retreat rituals are on offer at Auriga Wellness.

The unobtrusive and highly personalised services of a dedicated Capella Personal Assistant further complement your stay.

Region

Renowned for its highly developed arts, interesting culture and glorious beaches, one will never have a dull day in the Indonesian paradise that is Bali. Although the island attracts large numbers of visitors there are still areas that remain undeveloped on the whole, places to find peace and escape the crowds. On the other hand if you are looking for a good dose of lively nightlife and excellent restaurants you will also be very happy to stay in the area of Seminyak.

Mountains and active volcanoes, rice crops and rivers provide diverse landscape and awe-inspiring scenery through the centre of the island, where wildlife such as mischievous monkeys may be spotted and the sounds of the jungle will surround you.

The artistic capital of Ubud has now grown these days from the once small village-like town, revered for being an artistic hub, to a buzzing large town with plenty of shops, restaurants and things to see and do. It has still retained a charm however and is a lovely place to spend some days. Ubud does remain a spiritual and holistic centre with plenty of opportunity for yoga and retreats. Further cultural experiences include visiting various Hindu temples such as the Tanah Lot or taking a trip to the Subak irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which irrigates the paddy fields in Jatiluwih.

There is a plethora of fantastic places to stay in Bali along the south and east coast from Canggu, a trendy enclave for surfer types and great for families to bohemian Uluwatu, east of the airport and then further along this coast, a scattering of gorgeous places set in dramatic scenery with volcanic beaches. The north is largely untouched by tourism and there are a few lovely places to visit for those with more time to explore, including a national park in the north west.

Bali is also host to many festivals, including the Indonesian International Film Festival and International Kite Festival. The Balinese people are gentle, friendly and welcoming and are one of the many reasons visitors return to this lovely island repeatedly.
