Azura Benguerra lies on the western side of Benguerra Island, 14kms off the coast of Mozambique.

Surrounded by the turquoise Indian Ocean waters, the island is an unspoilt haven of swaying palms and soft white sand, reached via a 10 minute helicopter flight from the mainland.

Blending modern chic and traditional Mozambique, the 18 luxurious villas are just footsteps from the beach. Each has its own private pool, outdoor sala and deck. A two-bedroom villa and presidential suite are available for those requiring additional space.

Dining is all part of the experience, and in a variety of different venues: from breakfast in the main area, to dinner on the beach under the stars, the gorgeous views and ocean breezes adding to the island ambiance.

Azura has a spa and a fully-equipped 5 star PADI dive centre. A wide variety of optional activities can be arranged at an additional cost: landrover island drives, sunset dhow cruises, diving, snorkelling, fishing and island hopping. Benguerra’s considerable tidal range means low tide could be a fair distance from Azura.

Region

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of six islands in Mozambique, near the mainland city of Vilankulo. The islands became a national park in 1971, and is an important area of conservation due to the wide range of marine life.

For this reason, it is hard to beat the diving in Bazaruto – reef fish, sea turtles and devil rays are regularly seen swimming in the crystal clear turquoise waters. Various endangered species such as the whale shark, humpback whale and the dugong may also be spotted.

The islands themselves are untouched and idyllic, with elegant palm trees giving way to lush vegetation, where you might see a Samango monkey swinging through the trees.

To see the islands in all their glory, take advantage of the various tours on offer, such as horseback riding tours, or sail around to find the perfect snorkelling spot on a Dhow cruise and experience nature on a more intimate level.

Mozambique has a tropical climate with two seasons; one is a humid wet season from November to February and the other is a hot, dry season from March to October. Most rainfall occurs from December though to March time.

The best time to visit Bazaruto depends on which activities you are aiming to partake in. Generally though, travellers prefer the dry season as these are cooler and negates any risk of being caught by the hurricane season (February and March). Travelling during the dry season also gives visitors the best chance of experiencing the Humpback Whale migration. The best time to see whale sharks is from October to early December.
