Region

Spanning north eastern Oman and the eastern United Arab Emirates are the Al Hajar Mountains, the highest mountain range in the eastern Arabian Peninsula. Separating the low coastal plain of Oman from the high desert plateau, this diverse landscape leads to many stunning views.

The mountains themselves are rich in plant life, with vegetation changing as you venture up to around 2,000 metres above sea level. At lower levels lie shrubbery, which grows richer and becomes woodland higher up, with fig and olive trees scattered along the paths. A number of birds, lizards, butterflies and mammals may also be spotted along the mountain range, giving trekkers opportunity to learn new, sometime endemic species such as the Oman Rock Gecko. There are 11 marked trails of varying intensity and duration along the Hajar Mountain range, giving explorers of all backgrounds the exciting opportunity of viewing such incredible scenery.

Thrillseekers can experience the Via Ferrata, scaling the mountain face linked up with a safety harness to the steel cable embedded into the rocks. A spectacular way to appreciate the surroundings!

Culturally there are several heritage sites to visit in the Jabal Akhdar region including Nizwa Fort, Jabreen Castle and UNESCO-protected Bahla Fort. From the end of March, visitors can also see the glorious Damask Roses cover the mountains with the harvest beginning in April. Thought to have been originally brought in from Persia, the roses are harvested by the local villagers to produce the highly prized Omani rose water.

Venturing up to this area of Oman is a must and can be done in a day trip from Muscat, however we strongly recommend a stay up here of at least three nights.

Local Area

Located in the central section of the Al Hajar Mountains, Alila Jabal Akhdar offers a gateway to the area’s incredible history, culture and nature. This rugged, mountainous region is one of Oman’s most compelling tourist destinations thanks to stunning landscapes that include Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, and Jabal Akhdar, meaning the "Green Mountain” in Arabic, considered the fruit bowl of Oman.

Far from the bustle of modern life, the region offers an escape to solitude, nature, fresh air and the most amazing panoramic views. The resort is surrounded by mountains, small hamlets, old, uninhabited villages, caves and canyons, as well as countless small roads connecting to new valleys and views.

The resort lies close to the Saiq (pronounced ‘Sirq’) Plateau, an extensive upland plateau surrounded by craggy summits and steep gorges. The Mediterranean climate here makes it ideal for the cultivation of many types of fruits. The area around the resort is particularly renowned for growing walnuts, pomegranates and Oman’s famed damask roses, which bloom from March to May covering the mountain side in swathes of pink. Take a walk through the rose terraces for an unforgettable experience. The roses harvested each year are used to make Omani rose water, a staple in every Omani household used as a culinary flavouring, fragrance and medicinal remedy.

The area is also a treasure for history and culture enthusiasts, who can explore the many heritage sites in the cities of Nizwa, Bahla, Ebri and more, such as Nizwa Fort, Jabreen Castle and UNESCO-protected Bahla Fort.

When in the mountains in Oman, as to be expected temperatures are a few degrees cooler than down at sea level. The winter months enjoy pleasant temperatures during the day, however the nights can be cold and it is always a good idea to take something warmer to wear for the evenings. April is the rainiest month and January the coolest.
The mountain climate is therefore perfect for enjoying local sightseeing, stargazing and outdoor pursuits.
