There are few places in the world where a boutique, characterful, historic and stylish hotel can be found just 15 minutes from the international airport, except for in Sri Lanka. The vibe here is definitely relaxed creating the perfect ambience for those staying here after a long flight.
This beautiful old colonial manor house is home to 17 rooms and suites, most of which are located around a water filled central courtyard. Family Suites offer interconnecting rooms and the fabulous Mountbatten Suite with private terrace and plunge pool can sleep up to 6 with the second room being two queen sized beds.
The hotel has plenty of outdoor space for acclimatising and relaxing with tranquil tropical gardens at the front of the hotel, a lovely swimming pool and even their own kitchen garden complete with goats!
A small spa with just two treatment rooms is a blessing for re-energising the body and soul before starting any journey elsewhere on the island. It is best to book any treatments in advance as the opening hours are flexible depending on guests requirements.
Delicious food is served in the restaurant from traditional curries to a good choice of western cuisine, a good option for those who have spent two weeks eating curry and fancy something simpler. The breakfast here is wonderful and will start the day off perfectly.
If time permits, stay two nights here and enjoy a visit to the local fish market, the island’s largest or simply play croquet on the hotel’s well-manicured lawns.
Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka, is definitely a worthy addition for anyone interested in the history and culture of the island. Whilst other areas boast ancient archeological sites, wildlife and glorious beaches, Colombo represents the modern side to the country. Old colonial buildings are slowly being ear-marked for luxury hotel developments and cafes in the future, artists display their work on the streets and in galleries and new restaurants and bars are giving the city an edge of cool.
Essentially Colombo is becoming more cosmopolitan by the day and it doesn't look like it is slowing down any time soon. It is a fun place to be, noteable by the increasing expat community, and although there is the usual craziness of traffic in most areas that is so distinctive of many an Asian city, there are also some areas that are much quieter and even some lovely parks to enjoy. A sundowner at the Galle Face Hotel is a lovely way to end a hard day's shopping, sightseeing and exploring in Colombo.
