Swakopmund, German for mouth of the Swakop, is a city on the coast of Western Namibia, situated in the Namib Desert. As the name suggests, it has a multi-dimensional appeal – German colonial architecture mixed with a quintessential African landscape, making it a particularly alluring destination.
Inland, there is ample opportunity to go and explore the amazing Namib Desert, with towering, brightly coloured sand dunes underlining the horizon. Venture closer to the shore and visit the Swakopmund Museum to learn about the town’s history, and marvel at the various displays of plants, minerals and cultural artefacts. The Musuem itself is situated at the foot of the lighthouse and occupies the site of the old harbour warehouse, destroyed in 1914 by a “lucky” shot from a British warship. From the lighthouse it is possible to see the Jetty, a 500m iron jetty built in 1904 for ships to take anchorage off the relentless coastline.
Another exciting place to visit on the waterfront is the National Marine Aquarium, which allows close up views of graceful rays, colourful fish and toothy sharks.
With an abundance of activities and beachfront cafes set on the gorgeous Namibian coast, Swakopmund is the perfect place to experience what Africa has to offer.
