Built in 1895 for Canterbury pioneer Sir Heaton Rhodes, Otahuna is considered one of the best examples of Queen Anne architecture in Australasia and is protected by a Category One listing from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
The Lodge, set in New Zealand’s largest private historic estate, is an exclusive retreat offering seven individual suites, retaining grand architectural features from the 19th century such as ornate wood-burning fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows.
Food and wine are an integral part of the Lodge experience. The menu celebrates the best of fresh New Zealand produce with an emphasis on
seasonal estate-grown offerings from the Lodge’s own organic kitchen gardens.
The spectacular 115-year old gardens, ‘A New Zealand Garden of National Significance,” stretch over 30 acres. Wide vistas contrast beautifully with intimate walks which wind through wooded glades.
Situated at the base of the Banks Peninsula, Otahuna Lodge is just 20 minutes drive from the city centre of Christchurch, making it the ideal place from which to explore Canterbury. Wineries, private gardens, championship golf, world-class fishing and even the world’s rarest dolphins are all just a short drive – or helicopter ride – from the front door.
From snowcapped mountains and sparkling glaciers to turquoise lakes and lush peninsulas, the South Island's majestic landscapes offer a cornucopia of adventurous activities, as well as stunning scenery.
South Island is a favourite for wildlife enthusiasts - Stewart Island is home to the iconic but shy Kiwi and Blue Penguin colony in Oamaru is home to a spectacular number of these feathered friends. Whales, fur seals and dolphins are all easily spotted in the coastal waters around Kaikoura, a popular diving destination due to its incredible array of marine life.
Gastronomically, South Island is unique, as locals have creative takes on locally sourced lamb and seafood like abalone, oysters and scallops.
Spend a few hours hiking or mountain biking through one of the National Park’s, where the landscape is diverse and dramatic, yet easily accessible. Or try rafting, skiing, diving and even skydiving - South Island is for those who wish to live on the wild side.
