Marataba Mountain Lodge is perched on the side of the mountain, with 180 degree views into Waterfall Valley. It is utterly remote, in a wilderness world of its own for never more than 10 guests at a time.
Every stone, ledge, window, piece of furniture and soft finish takes its cue from the natural environment. The essence here is on the outside, and the lodge complements this rather than competing with it. But at the same time every comfort has been met, and no compromise has been made on the quality of every single element a guest would encounter through their senses. Only the finest of materials (from timber to cotton
sheeting) are used and carefully put together in imaginatively simple ways.
The result is an off-the-grid ‘Scandi-Safari’ style luxury lodge perched lightly on the earth and almost fully powered by the sun’s energy.
The pool area at Marataba Mountain Lodge is built between natural rocks and Wild Olive trees, and is far enough from the ‘heart-of-house’ to allow for complete privacy, yet close enough for quick service. The 6m long martini step is the perfect place to enjoying the infinite view of the valley at sunset, perhaps with an ice-cold G&T.
Situated close to the Kalahari Desert, just on the Botswana border lays Madikwe game reserve- a reserve a little bit different to other parks and reservation areas in South Africa.
Established in 1991 after the African government decided the soil was too poor for farming and the disadvantaged area needed an economic uplift, 10,000 mammals were relocated from other National Parks, and this was the birth of Madikwe Game Reserve.
Although one of the lesser known conservations in South Africa, Madikew is beautifully unspoilt and a lot less busy than the larger parks meaning a more authentic and real experience. It’s now home to 120 different mammal species including some rare and endangered such as the Black Rhino and African Wild Dog. It is a malaria free area ensuring that extra peace of mind when on your safari experience.
Today the reserve is regarded as a prime example of how relationships amongst communities and government can enhance conservation success.
