Garonga Safari Camp is situated in the 60,000 acres of Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve, just west of the Kruger National Park. Six luxury tents are fashioned using rough, natural materials, the warm hues balanced with bright spaciousness. The style is an adventurous mix of airy cave and tree-house.

Each safari tent has a deck and comfortable hammocks, which are perfect for lazing in whilst looking out over the dry riverbed, a natural game path. Main areas include an open-plan lounge, dining rooms, bar and a shop. Ultimate relaxation can be experienced in the central pool, bush bath or during a massage treatment. Excellent cuisine paired with fine wines is served in a variety of locations, including boma dining and summer picnics.

Garonga offers the Big Five safari experience, with knowledgable and expert trackers and guides who will show you the wide variety of animals in the

nature reserve. You can track wildlife in the pre-dawn or enjoy traditional early morning and late afternoon game drives.

Take a safari walk with a game ranger which takes you close to the flora and fauna of the nature reserve. The guides will also point out the birdlife and explain how they track animals by their prints.

Guests can also take advantage of Garonga’s exciting sleep-out experience, where they can sleep out in the wild on the beautiful deck in the middle of the bush with stunning views over the veld. A romantic four poster bed with mosquito netting ensures a good night’s sleep, with a convenient wash basin and toilet on a separate deck. Guests are left overnight in ultimate seclusion with a sumptuous 3-course dinner, a cooler box (with the all-important drinks of their choice), teas and coffees and a radio to contact the main camp, which is a 20 minute drive away.

Region

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. Covering an area of over 19,000km, its natural landscape of mountains, tropical forests and bush plains are home to nearly 150 mammals (including elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo), 100 reptiles and over 500 species of bird.

There are several different ways to experience this wonderful reserve, not solely the standard safari jeep. Why not take an exhilarating bush walk instead and follow the footprints of the phenomenal creatures.

For those wanting more of a private experience, Sabi Sands game reserve is a private game reserve for visitors wanting a longer safari experience. This means no day visitors are authorised in the reserve. It shares open borders with the Kruger National Park, ensuring the animals and wildlife can wander where they please without the restriction of fences. Sabi Sands proves to be particularly liked by large herds of animals, and leopard spottings are frequent here, and with the rangers being allowed to safari off road (Kruger National Park does not allow this), you can quite literally get a deeper safari experience!

The warmest months of the year in Kruger National Park are generally also the wettest months. From November to March the lands are glorified with rain, yet April through to October are vastly different with the temperature dropping slightly and the rainfall ceasing.

The daily hours of sunshine in this region maintain a constant of around eight hours a day, and come rain or shine, the region is perfect for exploring.
