Chalet Tschoder boasts the best location in St Anton. Not only is it one of the very few, if not only ski in - ski out chalet (via on-piste) available to rent in the resort. But being perched on the piste leading down to the Nasserein ski area, the nursery slopes for ski school and first time skiers, Chalet Tschoder is our top family pick for St Anton. And it's attributes don't stop there. Outdoor hot tub, dedicated cinema room, spa area with sauna and gym, it is the epitome of a family home in the Alps. And with 7 bedrooms, there's enough room to house 3 families!
Lovingly restored in 2016 by it's Austrian owner (whom was born and bred & never left St Anton in her long life!) the chalet is a masterpiece of tradition and charm. Though actually a duplex apartment (aforemention owner has retained a buidling attached alongside which she keeps to herself), the space is very deceptive as it feels like a standalone chalet. The reclaimed wood throughout oozes warmth and simply smells like the mountains! On entering there is the professional kitchen with dining for up 14 guests. Out through the French windows you will find the secluded outdoor Hot Tub on the terrace with decking area for pre-dinner champagne and canapes.
The double height sitting room above on the first floor is the perfect spot to collapse around the fire,
gazing out onto the pistes watching the last skiers of the day return home or the piste bashers about to commence their evening ritual. There is a bar, fully stocked, to tuck into for a nightcap post supper. On the same floor are four of the seven bedrooms.
The Master Bedroom with fixed double and en-suite shower room is located in the eaves of the chalet - please note that the bathtub does have restricted head head room but there is a separate shower across the landing. Two bedrooms can be made into twin or double bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms, one having a separate additional shower. And the fourth room is the bunk room sleeping up to 2 with a separate shower room next door.
Venture down to the floor below the entrance level and you will find the remaining three bedrooms, two grand spacious twin or double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and French windows out onto the terrace, and the final of the seven bedrooms is an open plan twin or double bedroom with the bath tub in the bedroom! A very Austrian quirk but there is a separate shower too.
This floor is also home to the entertainment and spa facilities so one could say, this floor is ideal for the younger lot of the party!
Whether it's a fair judgement or not, St Anton is well-known and loved for its lively nightlife and apres ski, heralded as the queen of the Alps on this front! Whilst this can indeed be understood at around 5pm when skiing past the rowdy audience, stamping upon the tables at the established Mooserwirt or Krazy Kangeroo slopeside restaurants, it's not the epitome of the resort. Family friendly and traditional at heart, the pedestrianised street that is the central vein to St Anton is very beautiful. Not clad with shoulder to shoulder uber exclusive boutiques, you'll need to pop over to the neighbouring resorts of Lech & Zurs for these, but instead an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars & shops that cater to all tastes (and depths of pockets!).
The skiing, however, is St Anton's bijou gem. As the largest resort of Austria's largest connected ski area, Arlberg, by staying in St Anton you have this ski area easily accessible at your finger tips. From the great heights of the towering Valluga Mountain heralding Europe's longest lift-connected-on-ski's off-piste trail (ski guide advised) to the gentle nursery slopes of the Nassarein, this ski area really does offer something for everyone. As well as a plethora of activities for non-skiers too; be it the 4km toboggan run down from Gampen to Nasserein with the obligatory 'Gluhwein' stop off half way down. Or a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the magical valley of Verwall - there really is 'fun for all the family' here. And all served up with the friendly Austrian hospitality which is a reason in its own right to visit St Anton.
