One of the finest examples of traditional Tyrolean craftmanship, Chalet Maria Schnee is a standalone 7 bedroom chalet in the exclusive area of the Nasserein in the ski resort of St Anton. This area is blissfully quiet yet walking distance (10 minute walk or 3 minute drive) to the hustle & bustle of this buzzing ski resort. And it's even closer distance to the Nasserein ski lift which is at the foot of the nursery slopes. Convenient for families, this is the ski school pick-up & drop off spot. This chalet truly is one of the finest family chalets in St Anton.
Built by the Austrian famous World Cup alpine skiing champion, after which the road is named, Gertrud Gabl & her family, the Tyrolean theme flows through every aspect of the property. From the intricately carved reclaimed wood of the walls & floors to the traditional stube stoves found in many of the bedrooms, still in working order should you wish!
The large open plan living room and dining room with a delightful 'country cottage' style kitchen is flooded with natural light from the French windows that cascade out on to the balcony & terraces.
There have been some modern splashes added to the walls with statement art pieces but this works perfectly. With a sunken sofa & sitting room area nestled around the fireplace, there is ample of space for a large, extended family to stay at Maria Schnee.
Perhaps a litttle random, but it works well for teenagers, there is a Double / Twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom off the kitchen.
Up the stairs to a 'holding landing' is the Scnapps Snug - as the name suggests, an alcove with fur rugs on the curved benches and the spot to enjoy your very own in-house apres ski with a shot of Shnapps! Off this landing is a Twin / Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
Continue up the stairs and you reach the top floor where a further four bedrooms are located. Including the Master Bedroom with en-suite bathroom and Tyrolean Stube stove. Two of the bedrooms are Twin / Double rooms, one with its own en-suite bathroom, the other has a separate private bathroom. The remaining bedroom on this floor is a Quad Bunk Room sleeping 4 with a separate private shower room.
Back down and below the living room floor is the lower ground floor with the final bedroom. Here there is a Twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom. The remainder of this floor is dedicated to the children! With a glorious playroom and cinema room fully equipped with all the 'clobber' the kiddies could need or want! There is also the spa areas with hammam sauna. As well as laundry and nannie's professional kitchen, where lunches / snacks can be prepared to keep the little ones happy whilst the parents are out on the slopes during the day.
Whether it's a fair judgement or not, St Anton is well-known and loved for its lively nightlife and apres ski, heralded as the queen of the Alps on this front! Whilst this can indeed be understood at around 5pm when skiing past the rowdy audience, stamping upon the tables at the established Mooserwirt or Krazy Kangeroo slopeside restaurants, it's not the epitome of the resort. Family friendly and traditional at heart, the pedestrianised street that is the central vein to St Anton is very beautiful. Not clad with shoulder to shoulder uber exclusive boutiques, you'll need to pop over to the neighbouring resorts of Lech & Zurs for these, but instead an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars & shops that cater to all tastes (and depths of pockets!).
The skiing, however, is St Anton's bijou gem. As the largest resort of Austria's largest connected ski area, Arlberg, by staying in St Anton you have this ski area easily accessible at your finger tips. From the great heights of the towering Valluga Mountain heralding Europe's longest lift-connected-on-ski's off-piste trail (ski guide advised) to the gentle nursery slopes of the Nassarein, this ski area really does offer something for everyone. As well as a plethora of activities for non-skiers too; be it the 4km toboggan run down from Gampen to Nasserein with the obligatory 'Gluhwein' stop off half way down. Or a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the magical valley of Verwall - there really is 'fun for all the family' here. And all served up with the friendly Austrian hospitality which is a reason in its own right to visit St Anton.
