Carmelo Resort & Spa (formally Four Seasons Carmelo) is hidden amongst pine and eucalyptus trees on the banks of the famous Rio de la Plata, the river separating Argentina and Uruguay.
The stunning resort has Asian themes with pitched thatched roofs, Indonesian styling and an Eastern influenced Spa with an incredible array of treatments and meditation classes.
Enjoy your time relaxing in the gorgeous outdoor pool and sunbathing in the wonderful high summer temperatures where there is also plenty of shade from the mature pines.
There is an 18 hole golf course close by and biking trails, running, horse riding, Polo and fishing can also be arranged. There is also wine tasting and gourmet lunches at nearby vineyards where the speciality is Tannat.
The bungalows are supersized with private terraces and gardens. They have huge bathrooms with separate showers, large bathtubs and underfloor heating. Some bungalows have a private outside courtyard shower. The interiors are equipped with large TV's, entertainment systems and espresso machines.
There are also split level suites in the main building which are closer to the Spa, restaurant and bar.
Pura is Carmelo's fine dining restaurant where local flavours are a speciality. Succulent meats are served daily from the traditional clay asado barbeque pit. For something lighter and more informal, the Rio Bar specialises in seafood, and the Mandara Bar is exquisite, serving cocktails by the jovial and attentive mixologists.
The Eastern coast and inland river region of Uruguay has a charming historical vintage air about it. Colonia is a UNESCO Heritage protected site with preserved cobbled streets, merchant houses and an impressive fort.
Cafe chairs and tables tumble out onto leafy streets, courtyards and plazas which are a welcome break from the wonderful photographic opportunities and pondering purchases from Colonia's vibrant arts and craft scene.
There are excellent restaurants and interesting hotels to soak up the atmosphere with good service in very pleasant surroundings.
Head north through gentle agricultural land to Uruguay's vineyards and olive groves. The home of Tannet and charming boutique wineries, making for a very relaxed stay with wonderful wine and farm to table cuisine.
